History of the Georgia Mass Band, Inc.
Georgia Mass Band, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2016 by four visionary musicians: Antonio Alexander, Elijah Thompson, Matthew Buggs, and Marcus Cummings. Brought together by their shared experiences at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi, they set out with a powerful dream—to create a space where musicians could come together, perform freely, and build something bigger than themselves. That dream has since grown into one of the most exciting and nationally recognized music ensembles in the country.
What began with a focus on Atlanta and its surrounding communities quickly expanded. Georgia Mass Band now attracts members from all across the state of Georgia and beyond. Today, it stands as a vibrant collective of passionate high school and collegiate musicians representing respected institutions such as Jackson State, Southern University, Talladega College, Miles College, Alabama State, Albany State, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and many more.
Georgia Mass Band is widely known for its electrifying performances and viral presence on social media. Our high energy shows, creative musical arrangements, and powerful sound have reached millions online and earned us a reputation as one of the most innovative and crowd thrilling ensembles in the nation.
We have proudly shared the stage with major recording artists including Monica, French Montana, and 21 Savage, bringing unforgettable brass and percussion energy to concerts, studio sessions, and televised appearances. Our band has performed at top Battle of the Bands events around the country and has successfully hosted some of the largest in Georgia.
Most recently, Georgia Mass Band was honored to perform at the MLB HBCU Swingman Classic, continuing our tradition of excellence on one of the biggest national stages.
But our mission goes far beyond performance. Georgia Mass Band is home to one of the largest music scholarship fairs in the world, connecting student musicians directly with HBCU band directors and opening doors to life changing educational opportunities. We also give back through community outreach, donating supplies to Metro Atlanta schools and investing in underserved neighborhoods through music, education, and engagement.
At our core, we are a community driven organization that stands for excellence, opportunity, and cultural pride. We exist to create safe, empowering, and inspiring spaces for young musicians to grow, perform, and succeed—not only in music, but in life.
